As I’m viewing from a distance, let me try and explain something to the citizen of North America, the population of the United States of America; You claim you have issues with immigrants crossing your borders, you say? You seem to think they take your jobs, steal your packages, rob your stores, buy your houses, invade your safe neighborhood and introduce crime, do you? And you seem to think they need to be ‘registered’ to live in the USA, so you deem they’re ‘illegal’ until they do, and therefore you need ICE and border patrol to catch them, throw them in jails and send them back to where they allegedly came from? You live on a huge bulk of land, with a population density of 38 humans per square kilometer. Even if you would let massive numbers of immigrants illegally enter your country, you would still have enough room/land/housing options left to allow at least double your entire current population in, have them all live in your forests and you wouldn’t even notice it! Wat ik maar niet begrijp, is die bizarre defaitistische houding jegens Russen, Rusland en hun regeringsleden. De argumenten die telkens geopperd worden tegen Rusland hebben altijd te maken met gebrekkige homorechten, persvrijheden, censuur, dictatoriale bureaucratie, uit ramen gevallen dissidenten en meer van dergelijke (nooit ècht bewezen) verhalen over leven in Rusland. Als men werkelijk beoogt Russisch beleid te beïnvloeden, dan is afstand creëren precies het tegenovergestelde van wat werkt. Niet isoleren, maar benaderen. Niet demoniseren, maar verbinden. Wie wil dat Poetin zich opstelt als een soort Nederlandse PSP’er uit de jaren tachtig, bereikt dat niet met sancties en morele verhevenheid veinzen, maar met wederzijds contact. Door elkaar als gelijken te behandelen. Door te luisteren. Door uit eten te gaan in Rusland, door Russen hier uit te nodigen, zodat bevolkingen wederzijds zien hoe dingen mogelijk beter zouden kunnen. Als EU-leiders werkelijk zo overtuigd zijn van hun morele superioriteit, hun verworven vrijheden en hun normen en waarden, waarom delen zij die dan niet met mensen die deze zogenaamd zouden missen? Waarom tonen zij niet wat er te winnen valt, in plaats van vooraf te veroordelen? Het lijkt allemaal zo definitief negatief besloten, alsof 'de Rus' een soort wild dier is waar niet…
